Z-18F ASW helicopter breaks cover

A larger People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter has long been expected and a new platform is now currently undergoing trials, according to Chinese media reports.

Christened the Z-18F, details of the aircraft were revealed in a Hangzhou-based newspaper report on 12 August.

The Z-18 features a redesigned cockpit and fuselage resembling Avicopter’s AC313, and is vaunted as a replacement for the Changhe Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) Z-8, itself a copy of the French Aérospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon that China imported in the 1970s.
