​USMC weighs up V-22 missile options

The USMC is considering placing forward facing missiles and rockets on its Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey fleet as it looks to bridge a current gap in escort capability.

Should the plans come to fruition, MV-22Bs would be armed to escort other Osprey aircraft whilst the latter version will carry out personnel transport missions, a USMC spokesperson told Shephard.

The spokesperson also disclosed that various rockets and missiles have already been fired as a ‘proof-of concept’ but additional testing would be required before the service could eventually integrate them successfully.

‘There’s a current requirement for an all-quadrant weapons system which we are re-examining.
