USMC bids farewell to Super Cobra

Helicopter leaves USMC service after almost 35 years.

The USMC has officially retired the AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter from service, manufacturer Bell Textron announced on 19 October.

USMC AH-1Ws are now being upgraded to AH-1Z standard, with a four-bladed main rotor and new avionics. 

Originally designated AH-1T+,the AH-1W entered service with the USMC in 1986 and the final helicopter was delivered in 1999. 

In all 222 helicopters were delivered to the US military, clocking up a total of 933,614h with the USMC.
