The US Air Force is looking to enhance the capabilities of its Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk fleet so it can operate more safely and effectively in so-called degraded visual environments (DVE).

Industry is currently being canvassed for potential DVE technologies that could prevent accidents such as controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) in low-visibility conditions or hard landings in rotorwash-induced brownout/whiteout conditions.

A request for information (RFI) was released on 6 January that set out more details.

‘Existing system capabilities do not provide adequate situational awareness of uncharted terrain/obstacles for safe flight operations in degraded visual environments,’ the RFI states.
