US Navy to beef up helicopter RPG protection

The US Navy is looking to develop an active protection system for rotary-wing and tiltrotor aircraft to repel attacks from enemy forces using unguided munitions such as rocket propelled grenades (RPG). 

According to a presolicitation released on 18 August, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) is accepting white papers and full proposals for the design, development, and demonstration of a Helicopter Active RPG Protection system, known as HARP. 

HARP will have the capability to be linked with a helicopter's existing aircraft survivability equipment (ASE) and also be compatible with the AN/ALE-47 countermeasure dispense system, which can fire off chaff
