US increases military aid to Iraq

The Pentagon is set to increase its military aid to Iraq with the approval of two possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) contracts for the provision of helicopter support and additional hellfire missiles. 

The US government has approved plans to award Bell Helicopter a $500 million contract to help the Iraq Aviation Command operate and maintain its fleet of Bell 407, OH-58, and Huey II helicopters for the next five years, the Pentagon announced on 26 July.

In a separate announcement, the State Department also confirmed plans to send another 5000 Lockheed Martin AGM-114K/N/R Hellfire missiles, worth $700 million,
