Airbus Helicopters has received a contract modification from the US Army for 16 additional UH-72A Lakota helicopters, the company announced on 23 March.

The contract, worth $116 million, includes the UH-72A production aircraft, associated technical and flight operator manuals and programme management in training configuration for the Initial Entry Rotary Wing mission at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

The UH-72A is a twin-engine utility helicopter designed for a range of military operations including troop and light cargo transport, medical evacuation, VIP transport, border security and homeland defence.

Available in various configurations, the UH 72A Lakota is a prime component of the Army’s Aviation Restructuring Initiative and the primary rotary-wing trainer for the US Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker.

Chris Emerson, president and CEO of Airbus Helicopters, and Head of the North America Region, said: ‘We are proud of our partnership with the US Army. As the world’s best helicopter trainer provider, we recognise how important an asset the Lakota is for the army aviation and our nation.'
