US Army begins Apache sensor upgrades

The US Army has begun the process of upgrading the electro-optical sensors on its Apache AH-64E aircraft, allowing crews to see daytime colour imagery for the first time.

A $54.3 million contract was awarded to Lockheed Martin last month to begin upgrading the Apache’s modernized target acquisition designation sight/pilot night vision sensor (M-TADS/PNVS), also known as Arrowhead.   

Under Phase 2 Lot 1 of the modernised day sensor assembly (M-DSA) contract, Lockheed Martin will produce an initial 35 kits and spares for the US Army and Qatar Emiri Air Force.

Sensor imagery will now be high-resolution, near infrared
