Egypt requests Hellfire II missiles
The US State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale of AGM-114K/R3 Hellfire II missiles to Egypt, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on 8 April.
Egypt is seeking the purchase of the missiles as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland defence. This will be the first transfer of the R variant of the missile to the country. Egypt already has the F and K missile in its inventory.
Egypt has requested the possible sale of 356 AGM-114K/R3 Hellfire II air-to-ground missiles with containers, spare and repair parts, support equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, US government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistical and programme support. The estimated cost is $57 million.
Lockheed Martin will be the principal contractor if the sale goes ahead.
