US approves Hellfire sale to UAE
The US State Department has made a determination approving a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of AGM-114 R/K Hellfire missiles as well as training, equipment and support to the UAE, it was announced on 13 May.
The estimated value of the sale is $476 million. The UAE has requested 4,000 AGM-114 R/K Hellfire missiles over a period of three years in increments of 1,000 to 1,500 missiles. The sale also includes training and technical assistance.
The proposed FMS will enable the UAE to strengthen homeland defence and its capability to meet current and future threats.
If the deal goes ahead Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control will be the primary contractor.
The AGM-114 Hellfire is an air-to-ground missile. The tactical missile system can be used on various platforms, including providing heavy anti-armour capabilities for attack helicopters.
