Ukraine looks to updated Hueys

Ukraine is in discussions with a group of US investors to set up a domestic facility for the remanufacture of Bell UH-1 utility helicopters for eventual military service in Eastern Ukraine.

Negotiations centre on the establishment of production alongside a Ukrainian company, possibly Antonov plant, according to an official spokesman of the Ukrainian Minister of Defence Stepan Poltorak.

The ambitious plans call for an initial production volume in the range of 50-70 aircraft annually, with the possibility to significant increase this in coming years. 

The work would involve US company Southwest Florida Aviation International (SWFAI), which specialises in the overhaul,
