UK exercise prepares helicopter crews for Afghanistan

England’s Salisbury Plain is playing analogue to the environs of Helmand Province for the next three weeks as UK troops prepare to deploy to Afghanistan later this year.

Until 11 February, thousands of troops, soldiers, engineers and airmen will be based at the Salisbury Plain Training Area – one of the few places in the UK able to cope with exercises on this scale that allows troops to be deployed and work closely with the helicopter forces they come to depend on during operations.

This year, the Mission Rehearsal Exercise, has been split into two halves.
