UK Chinooks deploy in Nepal for relief operations
The UK is sending 3 Royal Air Force (RAF) CH-47 Chinook aircraft to Nepal to assist in the British and Nepalese earthquake response, the government announced on 30 April.
The Chinooks from 27 Squadron based at RAF Odiham, Hampshire, are being sent by the Department for International Development (DFID).
The DFID is also providing funding for additional UN helicopters to assist the response to the earthquake. More specifically, it is providing £2.5 million to the UN Humanitarian Air Service.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these military and UN helicopters will help the British and Nepalese response by ferrying people and aid supplies across Nepal’s terrain, and enable humanitarian supplies to reach remote and hard to reach communities where aid is needed.
The UK government has pledged £15 million towards the relief efforts in Nepal so far.
