Thai army buys more AW139s

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) is expanding the size of its AgustaWestland fleet after signing up for eight twin-engine AW139 helicopters.

The latest deal, announced by AgustaWestland on 10 October, will bring the RTA’s AW139 fleet to ten. All eight new rotorcraft should be delivered by the end of 2016.

The follow-on purchase was apparently spurred by the crash of an army Bell 212 in November 2014 that caused nine fatalities, including the deputy commander of the Third Army Region. The new aircraft will be employed in ‘transport and utility services’ according to the manufacturer.
