Swedish Helicopter Wing begin Afghan Medevac training
Next April, the Swedish Helicopter Wing will begin a two-year mission in Afghanistan. Key responsibility for the Swedish mission has been given to the First Helicopter Squadron based at Kallax/Luleå.
The mission involves two Super Pumas, locally designated Hkp10 being used in the medical evacuation role, and crews have now began the task of training for that role.
'The Hkp10A as we fly with right now is a simpler version than the two Super Cougars that will be sent to Afghanistan,' said Captain Hans Rova, an instructor with the squadron in Lulea.
The helicopters to be sent to Afghanistan are being specially adapted to the situation. Among other things, they will be equipped with ballistic protection and advanced high-tech equipment. This is to make it as safe as possible for passengers and crew.
'The crew will consist of two pilots, an engineer, a mission specialist, a doctor and a nurse. The helicopter will be able to take up to two injured people,' said Hans Turnip.
