Sikorsky demonstrates air-to-air refuelling of CH-53K
Sikorsky has reported that a CH-53K King Stallion naval helicopter has completed an air-to-air refuelling test which took place above the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia with a KC-130J aerial refuelling tanker.
The test lasted for 4.5h and demonstrates the potential use of the King Stallion for long-range logistical support capabilities for the USMC.
Bill Falk, programme director for the CH-53K at Sikorsky, said that the test ‘reinforces the superior capabilities of the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter and its ability to carry more Marines, cargo and equipment over longer ranges and in more challenging environments’.
New reprogrammed CH-53K aircraft are heading towards the completion of a developmental test programme, with initial operational test and evaluation due to be completed in 2021.
First full fleet deployment is expected in 2023-2024.
