Selex ES LOAM on board Italian NH90
The first qualified Laser Obstacle Avoidance and Monitoring (LOAM) system developed and manufactured by Selex ES is now on board an Italian Army NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH). The helicopter has just been delivered to the Italian Ministry of Defence.
LOAM has been developed to improve the safety of the helicopter during low-altitude flight by increasing pilot situational awareness. Based on eye-safe laser radar technology, LOAM can detect obstacles - even very thin ones - along the helicopter’s flight path, such as power lines, ropeway wires and pillars. Early detection of obstacles allows the crew to safely change altitude or direction.
The validation activity for LOAM was managed in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Defence’s ARMAEREO.
In addition to LOAM, Selex ES provides other airborne systems for Italian armed forces' NH90s including a complete Communications, Navigation and Identification (CNI) capability, radar and mission systems.
