The Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) dual-mode guidance section has completed its second flight test at Eglin Air Force Base, Lockheed Martin announced on 23 July. According to the company, the test was a success.

The test saw the rail-mounted JAGM fly 6.2km and initially acquire the target using its precision strike, semi-active laser. The dual-mode guidance section then engaged its millimeter wave radar, and the moving target was destroyed.

The tests are part of Lockheed Martin’s risk-reduction process for the US Army’s 27-month Continued Technology Development programme.

Frank St. John, vice president of tactical missiles and combat maneuver systems, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said: ‘This second flight test success demonstrates that Lockheed Martin’s JAGM solution is a proven, low-risk capability.

'Our risk reduction activities support the US Army’s goal of using a demonstrated guidance section that minimises cost and risk and eliminates the need for additional development efforts during the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase.’

Earlier testing in February saw the JAGM dual-mode guidance section demonstrated with the engagement of a laser-designated moving target 6km downrange. The dual-mode seeker features an improved semi-active laser sensor and a low cost, all-weather, fire-and-forget, next generation millimeter wave radar.
