Russian Helicopters enhances Mi-35P
Rostec announced on 24 August that its subsidiary Russian Helicopters has begun serial production of the upgraded Mil Mi-35P attack helicopter.
Production is being carried out at the Rostvertol plant ‘under the first contract with a foreign customer’, said Andrey Boginsky, general director of Russian Helicopters.
The first Mi-35P serial production model previously completed type-specific flight tests, during which it performed a number of flights using new weapons and onboard equipment. These tests resulted in finalisation of the design, paving the way for mass production to begin.
The helicopter (derived from the Mi-35M - pictured) is now being displayed at the Army 2020 exhibition near Moscow from 23-29 August.
Features include an upgraded OPS-24N-1L target sight system with third-generation long-wave matrix thermal imaging; a high-resolution colour TV camera; and a laser rangefinder.
A new digital flight control system enables various processes to be automated, and a modern targeting and computing system ‘will increase the accuracy of target engagement’, according to Russian Helicopters.
Armament on Mi-35P includes a mobile 23mm twin-barrelled cannon and S-8 rockets. The helicopter can also be retrofitted with suspended containers for other 23mm cannons, S-13 rockets, Ataka ATGMs with a twin-channel control system, or Vikhr-1/1M guided missiles.
