DefExpo 2016: Rockwell to provide CAAS to Indian Chinooks

Rockwell Collins has been awarded a contract by Boeing to supply Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) for 15 CH-47F Chinook helicopters for the Indian Ministry of Defence, it was announced on 28 March.

Integration work is expected to commence in 2016 and complete in 2018. The Rockwell Collins India design centre will provide implementation and test of specific software changes requested by the Indian Army.

Troy Brunk, vice president and general manager, airborne solutions, Rockwell Collins, said: ‘We have a successful track record of integrating CAAS on Chinook helicopters that will ensure that the Indian Defence Ministry will receive on-time, on-budget, advanced avionics. The CAAS cockpit provides pilots with enhanced situational awareness while reducing crew workload and enhanced levels of flight safety. These are critically important to safe and effective operation of military aircraft.’

Sunil Raina, managing director, Rockwell Collins India, said; ‘This contract and the work we’re performing in country reaffirms our commitment to ‘Make in India’ initiatives.’

The Chinook multi-mission, heavy-lift transport helicopter is used by to move troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment. Its secondary missions include disaster relief, search and rescue, aircraft recovery, medical evacuation, fire-fighting and parachute drops.
