Raytheon has received a contract to deliver Stinger missiles and air-to-air launchers for South Korea's recently-procured AH-64E Apache helicopters, the company announced on 31 March.

Under the $35 million contract, Raytheon will start delivering the Stinger weapon systems in 2017. The current production version of the Stinger is the Stinger-RMP Block 1. It has a success rate greater than 90% in reliability and training tests. It can be used against all classes of helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles, and fixed-wing aircraft.

Michelle Lohmeier, vice president, land warfare systems, Raytheon, said: 'Stinger provides vital self-protection capabilities as well as defensive counter-air protection of aviation and ground forces.
'Most importantly, Stinger operates day and night, in all environmental conditions and allows for the engagement of multiple targets within seconds.'

Jack Elliot, Stinger programme director, Raytheon, said: 'With the emergence of UAVs in the battle space and the key role of helicopters, the evolved technology of air-to-air Stinger is easily adapted to defeat evolving threats.

'Stinger is an immediate- response weapon of choice against a wide range of air threats for protection of both fixed sites and manoeuvre forces.'
