Germany cancels heavy-lift helicopter acquisition

29th September 2020 - 17:42 GMT | by Tim Martin in London

Germany has announced the cancellation of the long running CH-53G heavy-lift helicopter replacement tender, citing budgetary difficulties and after close examination of industry offers.

The decision means Berlin will miss a scheduled 2021 contract award target as it sets about re-examining requirements and ‘changing specifications’ of the procurement.

A plan to buy between 44-60 aircraft, using a budget of $6.4 billion and approved by the German parliament in Q4 2018, had been expected to see Boeing and Sikorsky submit best and final offers before the end of Q4 2020.

However, both competitors now face an indefinite wait to resubmit proposals.
