China remains drawn to Russian helicopters

Development of indigenous helicopter types has not stopped Beijing from buying Russian-made military helicopters

The Chinese appetite for Russian-made military helicopters appears to be as strong as ever, despite efforts by Beijing to build up an indigenous production capability.

According to its latest annual report, released on 22 October, Rostec companies delivered more than 120 helicopters to China in 2019, mainly for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

Rostec said its subsidiaries (primarily Russian Helicopters) supplied 68 Mi-171 multirole helicopters (including the upgraded Mi-171E) plus 14 others with the VK-2500 engine.

The Chinese military also received 18 Mi-171Sh military transport platforms and, according to a Rostec spokesperson, some Ansat light multipurpose helicopters
