During a Senate hearing concerning the 2019 budget for the Department of National Defense (DND), the commanding general of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) Lt Gen Galileo Gerard Kintanar said ‘at least four qualified’ helicopter types could fill the Combat Utility Helicopter requirement to replace ageing UH-1s.

The four strongest contenders according to Kintanar are the Bell 412EPI, Leonardo AW139M, Sikorsky Black Hawk and Mil Mi-171.

A directive from President Rodrigo Duterte on 9 February cancelled a $234.5 million contract with the Canadian government for 16 Bell 412EPI helicopters just days after the sale had been announced.
