Leonardo has revealed its new Multiple Aperture Infra-Red (MAIR) missile warning system for fixed and rotary-wing aircraft at the Paris Air Show.

MAIR’s chief function is to detect and warn of incoming missiles. Designed to act in concert with other defensive aids as part of a defensive aids suite, MAIR detects threats at early stages and cues suitable countermeasures to foil them, such as Leonardo’s Miysis Directed InfraRed CounterMeasure.

MAIR makes use of multiple high-resolution, infra-red cameras installed around the aircraft to provide complete spherical coverage. The design draws upon the company’s experience in providing Infra-Red Search and Track (IRST) technology for aircraft such as the Gripen E and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

In addition to missile warning, the MAIR system is also capable of hostile fire indication, day and night imaging, as well as full IRST functionality.

Successfully tested in 2018, MAIR is scheduled to be ready for full production in 2020.
