Paris Air Show: Costs hamper heli ops

While rotorcraft are ‘utterly essential’ to modern military operations, vulnerability, range and cost issues continue to hamper their utility, according to one senior British Army helicopter commander.

Col Peter Eadie, commandant of the British Army’s Aviation Centre, said the lessons of recent operations had only reinforced the perception that helicopters were ‘game-changers’ for military commanders.

As one example, he described the Royal Air Force’s medical emergency response team-configured Chinooks that operated in Afghanistan as an example of how to provide the ‘gold standard in casualty extraction’.
