Northrop Grumman has been awarded a $15 million modification to an existing contract to deliver support equipment for the US Navy’s Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) programme.

Integrated into the MH-60S helicopter, ALMDS is used to detect, classify and localise floating and near-surface moored mines for mine countermeasure (MCM) operations. It provides a rapid wide-area reconnaissance and assessment of mine threats in littoral zones, confined straits, choke points and amphibious objective areas, and will be embarked as part of the MCM mission package on the navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship.

Under this modification, Northrop Grumman will fabricate, integrate, test, produce and deliver support equipment for ALMDS through to June 2020.
