Northrop Grumman will produce and deliver pre-production units of the APR-39D(V)2 radar warning receiver (RWR)/electronic warfare management system (EWMS) for the US Army and Navy as part of its existing joint services contract.

The order calls for the production of 18 APR-39D(V)2 units, with delivery expected in late 2014. Hardware-software and platform integration testing will take place in 2015.

The Northrop Grumman APR-39D(V)2 RWR/ EWMS is designed to protect a wide range of fixed, rotary and tilt-wing aircraft against airborne threats. The system works by improving aircrew situational awareness via interactive management of all onboard sensors and countermeasures, providing 360-degree coverage to automatically detect and identify threat type, bearing and lethality.

Janine Nyre, vice president of radio frequency combat information systems, Northrop Grumman, said: ‘Our APR-39D(V)2 merges the baseline capability of previous systems with the Northrop Grumman digital receiver technology to provide advanced capability for today's and tomorrow's threat environment. This lightweight system maintains interfaces with legacy systems and includes flexibility for future growth enhancements.’

More than 7,000 APR-39 systems have been installed to date on both US and international AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y, MV-22B, KC-130T, UH-60, OH-58D, CH-53, CH-46, AH-64A/D and CH-47 aircraft.
