Rheinmetall-led industry team keeps faith despite cancellation of German heavy-lift helicopter tender.

Sikorsky and Rheinmetall have expanded their German industrial partnership on the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter by adding Bavaria-based Reiser Simulation and Training.

Reiser joins the team as a subcontractor to Rheinmetall. The two companies already co-operate on the NH90 Sea Lion transport helicopter. Reiser also provides simulation services and training for maintenance personnel with the German Air Force Eurofighter fleet.

The Rheinmetall-led industry team for the CH-53K also Autoflug, Collins Aerospace, Hensoldt, HYDRO Systems, MTU Aero Engines, Rohde & Schwarz, Vincorion and ZFL.

It was competing against Boeing for the STH heavy-lift helicopter tender to replace a fleet of fleet of ageing CH-53G aircraft with 44-60 new platforms for the German Air Force. Shephard Defence Insight estimated a maximum acquisition cost of $6.6 billion for this programme.

German procurement agency BAAINBw cancelled the tender in September 2020, citing 'uneconomical' offers from industry, although Sikorsky has requested a review of this decision.
