NATO Joint Capability Group Vertical Lift (JCGVL) delegates were among more than 24 guests who viewed the US Marine Corps' (USMC) CH-53K helicopter during an event hosted by Sikorsky Aircraft.

The guests toured the Florida assembly and flight operations centre of Sikorsky Aircraft, where they walked along the CH-53K and Black Hawk UH-60M helicopter production lines. They also visited Sikorsky's development flight centre, the site of full system testing for the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter. They viewed the CH-53K Ground Test Vehicle prototype and the CH-53K Engineering Development Model 1, which is one of four flight test helicopters.

The delegates finally saw the first of two S-97 Raider helicopter prototypes. The second prototype will serve as a demonstrator aircraft. The S-97 Raider is a rigid coaxial rotor helicopter suitable for armed reconnaissance and various special operations missions. It has a cruise speed of over 220 knots.

Sikorsky leads an industry team that developed the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter for the USMC. The helicopter has a maximum gross weight of 88,000lbs and an external load carrying capacity of over 27,000lbs. It has a mission radius of 110nm under high hot ambient conditions.

The company continues to conduct tests on four flight test aircraft at its facilities in West Palm Beach and Stratford, Connecticut.
