Mi-38 engines enter production in Russia
Russia has brought production of engines for the Mi-38 helicopter in-country, with the United Engine Corporation (UEC) starting serial production of new TV7-117V engines developed by JSC Klimov.
The modification of the Mi-38 was previously developed with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127TS engines - the aircraft was initially developed for the international market where western engines offer a certification advantage. Now, with the Russian Ministry of Defence becoming the first to acquire the aircraft, the helicopters will be fully completed with domestic equipment.
According to JSC Klimov the TV7-117V has a higher power-on mode than the PW127T/S, has high fuel economy, and can operate in a wide range of climatic conditions from the tropics to the Arctic.
Russian Helicopters expects the Mi-38 helicopter to replace much of the existing Mi-8/17 family of aircraft currently in use.
Turboprop engine modifications can be also used on the IL-112V military transport aircraft which is being developed in part as a replacement for older AN-26 aircraft.
Anastasia Denisova, UEC representative, said: ‘In terms of efficiency, resources, reliability the engine is among the world's top samples in this class... By 2020 it is planned to produce totally at least 200 different modifications (for helicopters and planes). Earlier our engines for civil and military vehicles were made only in Ukraine. Now TV7-117V engines are made of details and engine components, that are entirely mastered in the country.
‘Before 2020 we plan to release more than 200 engines of TV7-117V engine family. Today the corporation has fully expanded the serial production of engines TV7-117V - major supplier of components for the final engines’ assembly will be companies, that are part of UEC.’
