Russian Helicopters’ Rostvertol has commenced serial production of the Mi-28NE combat helicopter with dual controls, the company announced on 16 March. The dual controls will allow operation of the helicopter by both pilot and operator pilot acting as instructor.

The Mi-28NE with dual controls retains all the aircraft's attack helicopter functions while simplifying the military pilot training process. The modernised Night Hunter prototype with dual controls, increased cockpit working size and modern energy-absorbing seats was produced in 2014, with testing completed at the end of 2015.

The Mi-28NE is designed for missions such as target indication for combat helicopters and aircraft; aerial reconnaissance; engagement of low-speed low-altitude airborne targets; and destruction of armoured vehicles. Weapons include unguided and guided missiles, and a flexible gun mount with a 30mm gun.

Alexander Mikheev, director general, Russian Helicopters, said: ‘The unique capabilities of the new combat helicopter create excellent prospects for its marketing both in Russia and abroad.’

Rostvertol has signed two supply contracts for the Mi-28NE to date.
