Malta plans new helicopter purchase

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) is looking for a fleet of new helicopters to be used for border protection, it has emerged.

Details of the project, released on the EU's tendering website on 30 August, show that the procurement will be at least partly financed through the European Borders Fund (EBF), which supports programmes that help to secure the Schengen Area borders.

Malta hopes to purchase up to three aircraft over the next two years. The first helicopter will be acquired with 2012 EBF monies, while the second will be subject to funding from the 2013 budget. A third
