Malta orders third AW139
Malta has ordered a third AW139 intermediate twin-engine helicopter from AgustaWestland, the company announced on 8 July. The order is part of wider plans to strengthen the capabilities of the armed forces of Malta.
While the first two AW139 helicopters are primarily for search and rescue and maritime surveillance, the newly ordered third helicopter will be used for maritime border control missions.
The AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter features an equipment package for search and rescue and maritime patrol missions. The package includes search/weather radar, a high-definition FLIR system, naval transponder, cabin mission console, satellite communication system and a search light. The four-axis autopilot of the helicopter also has search and rescue modes.
The AW139 is powered by two PT6-67C turboshaft engines and can fly with one inoperative engine. AgustaWestland has sold over 900 AW139s to over 220 customers across 70 countries. Over 730 helicopters have been delivered so far.
