Malta celebrates delivery of first AW139 helicopter
The armed forces of Malta have marked the delivery of the first AW139 helicopter from AgustaWestland with an official ceremony. The aircraft, which was delivered in June, will be joined by a second AW139 later in 2014.
The AW139 will be used primarily for border control missions. It has been delivered fitted with an advanced package for maritime patrol and search and rescue missions that includes a high-definition FLIR system, search/weather radar, cabin mission console, naval transponder, search light, satellite communication system, a 4-axis autopilot with SAR modes, external rescue hoist and four bag floatation system.
Malta ordered the second AW139 earlier this year, which is scheduled for delivery in December. The contract includes an option for a third aircraft, as well as a training package for pilots and technicians.
The AW139 was selected in July 2013 following an extensive evaluation process. The new helicopter acquisition is part of a wider programme to strengthen the armed forces of Malta’s ability to deal with national security issues.
