Malaysia decides to retire Nuri helicopter fleet

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will phase out its Sikorsky S-61A Nuri fleet, said its newly appointed chief Gen Ackbal Samad on 7 January. Ackbal said the decision was made due to the fleet’s age and the fact that sourcing support and parts was difficult and costly.

Ackbal said no phase-out date had been decided: ‘At this point of time, I cannot give you a specific date, but we are moving towards terminating the aircraft’s operations.’ He also noted the RMAF was currently assessing replacement options, including temporary leasing until new helicopters are acquired.
