Lockheed Martin receives Cobra targeting system contract
Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control has been awarded a $33 million contract for procurement of AN/AAQ-30(A) Target Sight Systems (TSS) for the US Marine Corps AH-1Z attack helicopter.
The TSS will be integrated into the AH-1Z Cobra helicopters as part of the Marine Corps H-1 upgrades programme for the remanufacture of legacy AH-1Ws into AH-1Zs.
The system provides target identification and tracking, passive targeting for integrated weapons, including Hellfire missiles, and a laser designation capability supporting friendly laser-guided weapons.
The contracted work is expected to complete by May 2016.
TSS has a large-aperture mid-wave FLIR sensor, a colour TV, a laser designator/rangefinder (with eye-safe mode) and an on-gimbal IMU integrated into a highly stabilised turret.
The system provides the capability to identify and laser-designate targets at maximum weapon range, significantly enhancing platform survivability and lethality.
