Lockheed Martin modernises USMC air C2 system
Lockheed Martin has completed upgrade work on the US Marine Corps’ Theater Battle Management Core System (TBMCS), enhancing the force’s ability to coordinate and execute air campaigns. The company announced the news on 11 June.
The TBMCS within the Tactical Air Command Center is the system that allows marines to coordinate flying operations for all air assets. The system links the command and control systems for the US Air Force, Navy, and USMC, and integrates with ground systems for army systems, enabling coordinated, synchronised air battle management.
The system was upgraded with the Marine Corps Air Mission Planner application. The planner successfully passed rigorous TBMCS test environments in a joint development test consisting of marines, navy, army and air force personnel in March 2014.
Rob Smith, vice president of C4ISR for Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions, said: ‘Replacing 18 years of legacy applications was a challenge. By collaborating with the marines on a regular basis we provided a system with the functionality that met all their expectations.’
The TBMCS system integrates a full range of intelligence, targeting, and airspace deconfliction applications that support coordination of precision engagement fires, safe passage and near real-time warnings of threats. Lockheed Martin updated the airborne command and control capabilities that produce air tasking orders that coordinate flying operations for fighters, cargo planes, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
