Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems has been awarded a series production contract from the US Navy to supply generator controllers for CH-53E heavy-lift transport helicopters, the company announced on 25 August.

The contract is worth up to $3.3 million and will run for two years. It is based on a development order that was awarded in 2010. The generator controllers, which control the helicopter's power supply, will be used across the navy's complete fleet of CH-53E  from the autumn of 2015.

Michael Mertin, CEO and president, Jenoptik, said: 'This series production contract is an important step for the internationalisation of our Defense & Civil Systems division. It provides lasting confirmation that our innovative solutions also attract attention in the US military market.'

Prior to the award of the series production contract, the generator controller underwent testing as part of the US Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) Foreign Comparative Testing programme. Under this programme, the US DoD evaluates products used by allied nations that demonstrate a high degree of technology maturity. In Jenoptik’s case, the German armed forces’ experience with the controller led to the system being tested under the 2009 round of evaluations. Improvements have been made to the component for delivery to the US.
