Japanese OH-1 returns to duty

The OH-1, a light observation helicopter type belonging to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), has been cleared to begin flying again after a fleet-wide grounding that has lasted more than three years.

The OH-1, produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and entering military service in 2000, was allowed to fly again according to a 1 March declaration.

The type’s operations were suspended after a forced landing of an aircraft belonging to the Eastern Army Aviation group on 4 December 2015 because of engine troubles.

That incident followed the crash into the sea of an aircraft on 17 February
