Japan lines up AH-X contenders

The Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) in Japan’s MoD has invited companies to provide information for its next combat helicopter to succeed the Fuji-Bell AH-1S under its AH-X requirement.

The JGSDF procured 90 AH-1S Cobras from 1982-2000. A total of 59 AH-1S helicopters remained as at March 2017, but this number will decrease rapidly and disappear within seven years.

Domestic and overseas AH-X candidates expected to respond to the RfI issued in May include the Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian, Bell AH-1Z Viper, an armed Sikorsky UH-60, an armed and improved Bell 412 and the Kawasaki OH-1 scout
