The Indonesian Navy has ordered 11 AS565 MBe Panther helicopters from Airbus Helicopters, with a contract announced for the purchase at Indo Defence on 5 November.

The AS565 MBe helicopters will be supplied by Airbus Helicopters to PT Dirgantara Indonesia. Under a strategic industrial agreement between the two companies, PT Dirgantara Indonesia will outfit the helicopters with mission-specific equipment before delivery to the Indonesian Navy.

The Indonesian Navy will deploy the aircraft in a naval anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role. They will be fitted with Helicopter Long-Range Active Sonar (HELRAS) dipping sonar and torpedo launching system, and will operate from land bases and ships.

Philippe Monteux, head of region South East Asia & Pacific, Airbus Helicopters, said: ‘The Panther now becomes one of the world’s most capable light/medium anti-submarine warfare platforms, with an advanced ASW suite and the capability to operate from corvettes or small frigates.

‘This fully-capable, modern solution meets the naval requirements of Indonesia and other countries in the region, benefitting from our partnership with PT Dirgantara Indonesia and the industry’s best system suppliers.’

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery within three years.
