India’s and Russia’s heads of state signed a much awaited contract for the production of 200 Kamov Ka-226T helicopters at the BRICS summit in Goa on 15 October.

Rostec has a joint venture with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to manufacture Ka-226T light helicopters to replace the Indian army’s and air force’s ageing fleets of Chetaks (Aerospatiale SA316 Alouette III) and Cheetahs (SA315B Alouette II/III mix).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sergei Chemezov, head of Rostec, had signed a $1 billion preliminary contract in December 2015. Negotiations on helicopter exports and after-sales servicing are presently ongoing.
