India will begin licensed production of the Mi-17 and Ka-226T helicopters, following a political agreement reached as Russia chases a lucrative Indian military helicopter tender.

According to Dmitryi Rogozin, Russia’s Vice Prime Minister, two separate agreements were signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the country on 10 December calling for assembly of the respective types on Indian territory.

Russian sources noted that the Ka-226 assembly could be launched during early 2015, while Mi-17 production would follow suit by mid-2015. The sources implied that India will also get the right to export the locally-built Russian design to third-party countries.
