IMDEX Asia: Airbus helps helicopters hit the deck
Airbus Defence and Space is using the IMDEX Asia exhibition to promote the virtues of its DeckFinder positioning system, which helps maritime helicopters and UAVs to land on the decks of moving ships.
The local positioning system consists of six ground-based transmitters and a corresponding airborne receiver, and uses radio frequencies to calculate the 3D relative position and the relative heading of the aircraft.
Julian Steffes, product manager for DeckFinder and naval applications at Airbus Defence and Space, said the system was a viable alternative to global navigation satellite systems and was suitable for a range of applications.
