Honeywell secures altimeter contract

Honeywell Aerospace has been awarded a contract by the US Army to continue the supply of its APN-209 radar altimeter for use across the army’s entire helicopter fleet, the company announced on 30 September.

The lightweight, compact APN-209 radar altimeter provides safety and awareness equipment. It provides an indication of height above the nearest terrain point below the helicopter, such as a building or tower, to the pilot and flight control computer. Thus the crew and the pilot have the most accurate information about the landscape around their aircraft.

The radar altimeter features low-probability-of-intercept, low-probability-of-detection and low-probability-of-exploitation that help the helicopters avoid attempts to obtain the location of the platform through the altimeter, thus reducing the chances of being detected during tactical and surveillance missions.

Carey Smith, president, defense and space, Honeywell Aerospace, said: ‘Honeywell has delivered more than 150,000 radar altimeters to defence and commercial customers around the world. Since 1975, Honeywell's radar altimeters have helped keep army helicopters safe in multiple theatres of combat, and dramatically increased performance across missions and in all types of weather and conditions.’
