HMAS Hobart in MH-60R handling trial
The Royal Australian Navy has conducted a deck handling trial of the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter aboard the guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart, the navy announced on 22 November.
The trial took place at the Oiler Wharf, Garden Island in Sydney, and was carried out by 816 Squadron’s Romeo Flight 6. It included an aircraft approach, landing, and subsequent launch.
The trial also included testing of the new aircraft-ship integrated secure and traverse system for the helicopter’s straightening and traversing in and out of the hangar. Flight deck clearance assessments; communications and lighting, chain lashing patterns, fuel connections and hangar clearance for maintenance and damage control were also tested.
Upon completion of the trials, the Defence Aviation Safety Authority will issue the destroyer with an Aviation Facilities Certification.
HMAS Hobart will return to sea early next year with an MH-60R helicopter embarked in order to continue trials and develop safe ship helicopter operating limits.
