Helitech Portugal: Sound ideas for helicopter safety

A Dutch company pioneering the use of a new acoustic sensor believes it could play a significant role in the safety and survival of military and civil helicopters.

Dr Jelmer Wind of Microflown Technologies told delegates at the Helitech exhibition in Portugal that Microflown’s Acoustic Vector Sensors (AVS) could provide a low-cost and low-weight alternative to the current crop of gunfire detection systems, as well as provide a 'bat-like' ground proximity system

Unlike a microphone, which measures sound from all directions, the AVS – first developed in 1994 – is sensitive to sounds but is able to measure the direction
