Heli-Expo 2016: Capability gap looming

The Pentagon is facing a capability gap before new vertical lift technologies enter service, a leading rotorcraft analyst has argued.

The US military continues to rely on aircraft that were originally designed at least 30 years ago with the V-22 being one of the most recent designs in service despite its first flight taking place in the late 1980s.

Mike Hirschberg, Executive Director at AHS International argued at Heli-Expo 2016 in Louisville that the most modern solutions that the US is working with today are modernised versions of old aircraft including the Apache, Black Hawk and Chinook.
