Heli-Expo 2011: Rolls-Royce continues to see strong rotorcraft market going forward
Rolls-Royce again used Heli-Expo as the venue to launch its annual 10 year forecast for the helicopter sector. The company said it expected 16970 turbine rotorcraft to be delivered in the next decade.
Speaking at the launch, Matt Haugk, vice president, marketing, sales and customer operations, said the company had called the upturn of the market a little early in its forecast last year, but that it believed that a strengthening of the market was now underway.
Breaking down the figures Haugk said that some 10,900 civil rotorcraft worth $34 billion were expected to be delivered by the end of 2020. Rolls Royce also expects some 6,070 military helicopters worth a projected $106 billion to be delivered in the same timeframe.
Last year Rolls-Royce predicted 10 year sales to be 16,446. Haugk said that this year's increase to 16,970 total deliveries in part reflects some deliveries forecast last year shifting right.
Looking at the engine market Haugk added that the company expected this to be worth a total of some $12.4 billion during the period. Some of the growth in the market is expected to come from China while other regions are expected to rebound strongly in the next decade.
Total helicopter deliveries in 2011 will be just under 1,500 units. Over the next nine years deliveries are expected to be over the 1,500 mark with the schedule peaking in the 2014 to 2016 time frame with some 1,700 rotorcraft a year.
In the civil market Rolls-Royce predicts the need to start recapitalising fleets with 43% of the current worldwide fleet over 25 years old. While in the military market the company sees new drivers such as emerging requirements for new heavy-lift rotorcraft.
